The Italian CIRA Aerospace Researches Center, participates as coordinator at RAID project; one of the eight plans by SESAR Joint Undertaking. Public-private partnership created to develop the modern European system for Air Traffic Management, has recently approved the financing. Both USA and Europe are allocating remarkable resources to the respective programs for ATM of the future.
Affirmed the General Director of CIRA, Eng. Leopoldo Verde. “The project’s aim is the pre-operating in flight demonstration of the integration capabilities of the Remote Piloted Aerial Systems in an air space not segregated. The absence in these aircraft, of a pilot on board brings the problem of their integration in the ATM system without risks for security. In two years of the project duration, the simulated flights and real flights will be made for the demonstration of technologies and innovative operating procedures that ensure a safe integration of the RPAS with the normal commercial and civil air traffic”.
The good results of the project will permit to these aircraft to be engaged in important missions of monitoring and surveillance of the coasts and of the territory, but also to carry out commercial activities, as for example the air mail transport.
